Material Safety Data Sheet Preparation:
About WHMIS Classification

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is a nationwide system in Canada used to provide workers with information on hazardous materials used within the workplace and is enforced by a combination of federal and provincial legislation.

There are three key elements in WHMIS; Labels, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and worker education. There are 6 hazard categories in WHMIS such as "Class B - Flammable and Combustible Material". Some of these classes are further subdivided based on certain properties. Each of these subdivided categories has specific label requirements in addition to general requirements such as the hatched border.
