New Substances Notification under Canadian Environmental Protection Act

The New Substances Notification Regulations were developed to ensure that no new substances are introduced into the Canadian marketplace before an assessment of their toxicity is conducted. A "new substance" refers to a substance that is not on the Domestic Substances List (DSL). Environment Canada (EC) and Health Canada (HC) both share the responsibility for assessing new substances proposed to be manufactured in and/or imported into Canada.
